Over the past year, I’ve been enamored with the concept of ‘reliquary’ and how the physical remains of saints can preserve their legacy postmortem. By combining reliquary with the broad concept of the cabinet of curiosities, I aimed to create a space where sex objects can assume the role of being extraordinary, fantastical extensions of the self. I knew I wanted to use neon pink plexi to construct my sculpture for its striking color and pink’s association with gay men. The way that the light shines through the translucent neon surface reminds me of stained glass windows and allows the objects to be voyeuristically seen without opening the cabinet. The front panel painting takes composition from Fra Angelico’s “Mocking of Christ” and twists the narrative to amplify the kinky and degrading nature of the original painting as well as the duplexity of eroticism and virtue that exists in my psyche.
