The Father and The Son diptych was created at a time when I was reflecting on my relationship with substances and specifically alcohol. Growing up and still currently, people in my family have grappled with alcohol abuse. I never knew what was going on when I was younger, but playing witness to it would continuously send me into a spiral of anxiety. The Father represents trauma rooted in both substance abuse and the church, while The Son depicts my anxiety medication and functions as a self-portrait of sorts. By having medication and alcohol assume the roles typically seen in the Eucharist, I can convey the gravity substances have had in my everyday existence.
