Discussing sentiments of ego death and the multiplicity of the self, “Self Pieta” explores the part of my own identity that “died” when I was younger. I was always dissuaded from pinks and purples despite having a natural affinity towards the hues. Meanwhile, I almost tricked myself into preferring blue as a means of defense. This painting appropriates historical architecture and composition as a lamentation for the part of me that I (metaphorically) had to kill to survive in my childhood and early adolescence. By finishing the painting with tassel trim, I am able to cement the narrative’s story-like quality and put it in the realm of holy tapestries.
